Staff Coach - Andy Uzomba
Andy has been training with REVOLUTION since 2009. If you ask him when he started playing soccer, he will likely tell you that he doesn't remember NOT playing soccer. He often jokes that he started playing soccer "when I started walking, I guess."
He was born in Nigeria and as a youth, Andy was in a soccer development program, training to become a pro soccer player. While politics are not a part of soccer, from time to time they impact what is happening on the pitch. Due to civil unrest in Nigeria, in January 1983 Andy had to leave Nigeria and join his siblings and uncles in the United States.
Andy made his way to central Ohio and attended the Ohio State University, graduating in 1999 with a business degree. Prior to starting college, he made one last attempt at a professional soccer career, trying out for the Columbus Crew in 1995 along side Brian McBride.
While he made it through the first cut, he was 31 years old. The mind was still very much willing, but the body not so able any more. He chose not to continue with tryouts and enrolled in college.
Although he may not have been able to chase his dream any more, he quickly developed a passion for helping others chase theirs. Over the years, he has been a fixture in central Ohio club soccer, with a Regional "D" coaching License. Before REVOLUTION, Andy trained with the Gahanna Magic, Grove City, CESA and New Albany Freedom. In addition, he runs a very popular off-season skills camp for boys and girls of all ages, which the kids affectionately call "Andy Camp."
Andy's philosophy is that training is the most important part of youth sports. If you teach the kids the skills of the game, then the wins will come. Translated to soccer that means possess the ball through superior skills and passing and the shots on goal will come.
Quote from Will Trapp
"WHO HAS HAD THE GREATEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR DEVELOPMENT?
I have a coach, Andy Uzomba, I met when I was six years old. I’ve worked with him the past 15 years."
In 2007, Andy married a beautiful Nigerian woman and together they have a son, Andy Jr. Maybe the dream is still alive … stay tuned.
